Alan Broughton

Alan wrote Australia’s first organic farming diploma course, teaching from 2001 to 2016 (Diploma of Organic Farming, NMIT, Federation Training). He came from a merino wool-producing farm background in NE Victoria and managed grazing research and organic certification from 2007 to 2016 with Australian Landscape Trust, at Strathfieldsaye Estate in Gippsland. He has published hundreds of articles on sustainable agriculture – and specially prepared this online soil management course for Farming Secrets. The lifelong soil expert teaches occasional organic courses in Vietnam with Mekong Organics and has visited and works closely with many organic farms across the world – from Australia to SE Asia and East Africa.

Alan holds a list of accreditations and associations: BA (Monash 1971); Certificate of Horticulture (Burnley, 1975); and Graduate Diploma in Sustainable Agriculture (Orange 1998). Since 1985 he has been involved with the Organic Agriculture Association (Gippsland) and is current vice-president. He also specializes in nursery work and is certified as a small organic producer by NASAA for over 5 years.
