Tour of Melbourne Food Gardens with Open Gardens Victoria
February 17, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 5:30 pm$150
In conjunction with Open Gardens Victoria, Sustain: the Australian Food Network is hosting a fascinating all-day coach tour of five urban food gardens will give home gardeners an insight into the amazing world of ‘urban agriculture’ in Melbourne.
Leading the tour is Karen Sutherland (Edible Eden Design) – a productive garden designer and urban food farmer. Karen will explain the many aspects and challenges of food growing and production in the urban environment of inner Melbourne.
Five gardens to visit
William Angliss Institute – here Karen will discuss the model productive garden she has designed to teach students how to grow, harvest and use a variety of plants in their catering.
Fare Share, Abbotsford – learn how this voluntary organisation grows and collects fresh food for supply to those in need.
Community gardens, Brunswick – explore the community gardens and ‘food forest’ of a vibrant and very active local community of gardeners and see how local government is engaging and supporting communities to grow their own produce.
Days Walk Farm – see how young people are training to become food farmers, with a view to increasing production in the inner city and providing low mileage food for the markets and kitchens of Melbourne.
Gunyah private garden – this is Karen Sutherland’s own garden where almost every plant is both attractive and productive. See how a diverse range of food plants can be grown on a small urban block to enhance the food served in your own kitchen.
This event is being held in partnership with the 2018 Urban Agriculture Forum and the 2018 Sustainable Living Festival – Australia’s flagship sustainability event – which runs for the whole month of February (see below for links).
Each destination and the urban agriculture network will benefit from your visit as Open Gardens Victoria will be making a financial contribution to each of the gardens.

William Angliss Institute, 555 La Trobe Street, Melbourne – barista brewed coffee & mint tea fresh from the William Angliss Raingarden
